Affidea Ambassador Thomas Barr makes history at the European Championships!

History was made in Berlin last night as Affidea Ambassador Thomas Barr claimed Ireland’s first ever medal in a men’s sprint event at the European Championships.

The Waterford athlete raced to a bronze in his best time since the 2016 Olympics, but he has now gone one better in a season’s best time of 48.31 seconds, from lane eight too, which Thomas described as like running with the blinkers on.

He made the race his own from the very start, chasing down two of the very best in the business in world champion Karsten Warlhom from Norway and defending European champion Yasmani Copello, the Cuban-born athlete now representing Turkey.

The whole of Ireland cheered him on as he ran one of the races of his life, punching the air with sheer joy on crossing the finish line; his unwavering enthusiasm infectious to everyone watching.

Thomas now joins the elite list of Irish medal winners at these championships – Delany, Murphy, Coghlan, O’Sullivan, O’Rourke, Heffernan, English, Mageean.

He spoke to us post race, saying; “It still hasn’t sunk in…I can’t believe I pulled it out of the bag!”

“I was really nervous early in the day, but then I started relaxing and just wanted to get out there to do my best.”

He even proved his worth as a commentator when he caught up with his old Team Ireland buddy David Gillick on RTE, joking that he was doing his job for him!

Draped in a tricolour flag, he thanked the “absolutely amazing” Irish support in the stadium that had helped him feel relaxed in the build-up, saying; “That’s when I run my best…when I’m relaxed….happy to be here.”

He added; “I would really like to thank my family, friends, coaches, mentors and my Affidea Family for all their support throughout the years. It really means the world to me and I’m glad I could bring home a medal for ye.”

A remarkable result in a fantastic summer for Irish sport.
