The winter slog has come and gone, pretty quickly it seems, and already I’ve found myself in the build up to racing season! This year’s second warm weather training camp in Tenerife began in April and is now coming to a close.

The sessions have become longer and hotter, the reps have become shorter, and the recovery between runs a lot, lot longer! We are well and truly into quality over quantity at this late pre-season stage.

My coaches have been working me hard on technical aspects of my races, from the block start to hurdling technique, stride pattern and sprinting technique. Trying to find and nestle into that unique blend of speed and relaxation to allow me to comfortably (if this is even possible) get around a 400m hurdle race, at speed…if that sounds difficult, it’s probably because it is!

I have ticked a lot of boxes and I can feel my body coming around to the demands of the event. The Easter training camp has always been invaluable to me and has always signified the ramping up and sharpening up point of the season, and the switch flick from winter to summer – the fun part of the season looming.

Racing season, where 7 months of training is laid bare and thrown up against the best in the world. Will I be nervous and frightened? Yes, but that’s all part of the adrenaline buzz that I love so much about racing.

I will be opening my 2019 outdoor season on May 19th, my first race being the Shanghai Diamond league. It’s a big event to open on, but it’s a great one to get the season rolling, and an invitation to a Diamond League is not one to be sniffed at!
