  1. What’s your background?

I am a graduate of both Cardiff University and University College Cork. I originally trained as an Engineer and read for a post grad after my first degree. After that I travelled the world working for some of the biggest international companies. I specialised in Process Re-engineering and worked on large global projects. After a few years, I wanted to give something back, so I decided to become a doctor. I originally trained in Emergency Medicine, covering everything from neonatal ICU right up to acute adult medicine and everything in between. I also trained in family medicine. My passion is pre-hospital care and I work alongside An Garda Síochána, The Cork Fire Service and The Civil Defence on a regular basis. I also trained with London Air Ambulance and I lecture in UCC Medical School.

  1. Why did you join the #AffideaFamily?

I was looking for a new challenge and I was lucky enough to get involved from the very start of the new ExpressCare clinic at The Elysian in Cork. I work closely with Dr. David Foley at his consultant-led ExpressCare clinic in Tallaght in Dublin, and we clicked the first time we met. The whole concept was perfect. Working with great people in a purpose-built facility where you applied your skills to get a focused history, order appropriate diagnostics and strategise a well-planned outcome for the patient in a newly built state-of-the art-facility…why wouldn’t you join?

  1. What differentiates us in your opinion?

Culture and people! I have over 20 years’ experience in industry and what differentiates organisations is culture and people. The people I work with every day put the patient at the centre of everything we do. I am proud to be a member of this team. It is why I became a doctor. When you are sick or in pain or scared, you need the best looking after to you, but you also need them to really care about you. Our people – that is the differentiator.

  1. What does your average day look like?

Well, no two days are the same and that’s the great thing about medicine. I start early to work with coffee in hand and you never know what will come through the door. Every patient has their story and my job is to listen to get them on the road to recovery. I know a lot of smart folk in Affidea and we are all pulling in the same direction.

  1. How do you like to create a healthy work/life balance?

I cross fit every day. I was a professional athlete when I was a much younger man and fitness is very important to me. I also try to surf or fly fish most weeks depending on weather. However, above all I spend time with my four kids. They are only small for a short time, so I soak it all up when I can. I never watch TV and I married the greatest woman on the planet!
