Three Affidea Ireland centres were recently awarded 5 Star status on the EuroSafe Imaging Wall of Stars – among only three Irish hospitals to receive the European Society of Radiology’s highest recognition for best practice in radiation protection, and testament to Affidea’s commitment to clinical excellence and patient safety.
The mission of EuroSafe Imaging, the ESR’s flagship initiative to promote quality and safety in medical imaging, is to support and strengthen medical radiation protection across Europe following a holistic, inclusive approach.
Martina Bonner, Clinic Lead, MRI and CT Clinical Specialist Radiographer, and CT Dose Excellence Project Lead in Ireland, said; “Radiation doses and patient safety are of paramount concern to both medical practitioners and patients alike. Affidea’s CT Dose Excellence Programme (CT DEP) guarantees patient safety, quality and standardisation for CT examinations across 12 European countries. Based on international best practice recommendations, key principles of justification, optimisation and through a multidisciplinary collaborative approach, CT examinations of a high diagnostic image quality are produced at the lowest possible radiation dose for every single clinical indication and diagnosis.”
“In Ireland, Affidea Naas, Dundrum and Cork are part of this programme, and the recent award of 5 stars by ESR further testifies to all the hard work and dedication of all our highly skilled CT Radiographers, Radiologists and Medical Physicists, and also to Affidea’s commitment to patient safety and quality during medical imaging.”
Katia Katsari, Chief Medical Physicist and European Dose Excellence Project Leader, said; “At Affidea, patient safety is at the centre of everything we do. We use modern medical equipment, that undergoes regular maintenance, replacement or upgrade according to strict company standards. Our equipment is subjected to thorough quality controls by medical specialists to comply with European standards and our own radiation protection policy. Our medical professionals have received rigorous training in setting the balance between lower radiation dose and optimal image quality.”
“The DEP network was well received at Affidea Ireland from the beginning, since a dose awareness culture and patient safety were already part of our local staff’s mentality. It was the skills, experience, dedication and leadership of the Irish DEP leader, Martina Bonner, that guided the team to achieve excellence. The ESR EuroSafe 5 Stars accreditation is a significant European recognition of the quality, safety and best practice in radiation protection of the services provided to patients. Well done team!”
Currently, over one-third of the centres awarded 5 stars on the EuroSafe Wall are Affidea centres, which once again proves that reputable medical societies, like the European Society for Radiology, recognise Affidea’s commitment to providing the best quality medical services and the highest standards of patient safety.
We would like to congratulate our colleagues in Ireland and across Europe, in addition to Katia and Chief Medical Officer, Prof. Rowland Illing, for working closely with the countries to make this world-class achievement possible.
