Affidea Ireland supports Operation Walk Ireland

Affidea Ireland is proud to support Operation Walk Ireland, a charity whose mission is to perform hip and knee replacements for patients with advanced arthritis who would otherwise not have access to this life-changing surgery, in developing countries such as Vietnam.

Operation Walk Ireland’s second mission in Hanoi last year led to 86 hip and knee replacements in 5 days, and engaged in a surgical educational programme with Vietnamese orthopaedic surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and physiotherapists.

Operation Walk was founded in 1996 by Dr. Larry Dorr in LA and has grown to 15 chapters in North America, with the Irish group the first international contingent.

Elizabeth Connolly, a nurse from Tallaght Hospital, said; “While travelling in Vietnam in 2014, I witnessed the resilience of the Vietnamese people and was touched by their warm and kind nature. I also saw poverty and a lack of accessible healthcare for many people.”

As a nurse in Ireland, I have seen the positive impact that joint replacement surgery can have in patients’ quality of life. With a new hip or knee joint, patients can return to active and fulfilled lives without pain and restriction in their movements.

“When I first heard of Operation Walk Ireland, I felt that it was the perfect fit for me. I had always wanted to use my nursing skills to volunteer in a country where access to high quality, safe healthcare was not always an option for everyone, and still had such warm, happy memories of the people I had met in Vietnam.”

“This mission is one of two happening this year, from March 26th to April 6th. We plan to complete 50 surgeries over 5 days and as the mission approaches I am so excited to meet the healthcare team we will be working alongside.”

I hope to use this opportunity to share my nursing knowledge with my Vietnamese colleagues, while gaining insight and new skills from their practice to deliver the best possible care to our patients in Hanoi and my patients back in Ireland. Our mission would not be possible without the support and donations of so many generous people and companies like Affidea Ireland.
