Affidea Opens New Medical Scanning Centre in Waterford

Affidea Waterford was proud to officially launch our new medical scanning facility on July 7, to serve the people of Waterford, Wexford, Kilkenny and Tipperary.

Investing €2.6M in the state-of-the-art clinic, as part of an overall €15M investment in the Irish healthcare sector, the multi-modality scanning centre located in Holly House, Arkeen, Cove Roundabout, Waterford will serve as a primary care diagnostic scanning facility; offering MRI, Ultrasound, X-ray and DXA. Affidea anticipates that 9,000 patients will attend the centre for 12,000 scans each year.

Affidea Waterford is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including the High Specification Siemens Aera Wide Bore MRI Scanner; providing the highest quality scans and a much improved patient experience, particularly for patients who experience claustrophobia or those who find it difficult to tolerate the noise of older scanners.

CEO Tom Finn said at the launch: “I’m delighted to open the new Affidea centre in Waterford today, which heralds an era of greater accessibility to medical scans for the people of the city and local areas. Patients can now receive timely attention quickly, professionally and to the highest of standards in a primary care environment, rather than a hospital-based setting. Affidea currently caters for the population in the South East with our centres in Kilkenny and Naas; however, the investment in this centre further reinforces our commitment to make scans accessible and affordable for everyone.”

Minister Halligan T.D. welcomed the fact that Affidea has created ten new jobs in Waterford in a mix of clinical and administrative roles, as well as boosting accessibility to medical scans, saying; “The opening of this new clinic will have a significant impact on the availability of diagnostic services to patients, ensuring timely and high quality treatments by experienced medical professionals working only with state-of-the-art technology.”

Olympic 400m hurdles finalist Thomas Barr commented; “As Affidea’s Brand Ambassador, I’m immensely proud to see state-of-the-art medical facilities and capital investment in my hometown. The people of Waterford now have access to the latest medical scanning facilities here in the local community. As a sportsperson, diagnosing injuries accurately and as quickly as possible through scans has a huge impact on potential performance as it ensures your rehab programme can be specifically tailored to maximise recovery time. Also, the monitoring of body bone health and fat/muscle mass through DXA scans allows for pre-emptive action. I am confident that the people of Waterford are set to benefit from the increased choice the new facility will bring.”

Affidea clinics are accredited with the internationally recognised standard in ambulatory care from the Joint Commission International (JCI) and will operate the new clinic in Waterford to the same exacting standards while undergoing the accreditation process.

Affidea entered the Irish market in March 2007 through the acquisition of MRI Ireland. Over the past ten years, nine further locations have been added to the network in Ireland, with more centres expected nationwide over the coming months, including a new diagnostic centre in Tallaght this summer, to serve west Dublin.
