Affidea sponsored Relentless Rowers become the first Republic of Ireland crew to row across the Atlantic

Affidea Ireland was proud to support Relentless Rowers as they broke a new world record by crossing the Atlantic in under 35 days on their trusted boat, Saoirse, in aid of Cork University Hospital Paediatric Department through CUH charity.

The crew – made up of Cork doctors Sean Underwood and Pat O’Connor, podiatrist Eoin O’Farrell and entrepreneur Tommy Browne – crossed the finish line at 5am in Antigua with an impressive time of 32 days, 22 hours and four minutes. They rowed two hours on and two hours off, capsizing one night during the second week, yet they were still hailed as the most chilled crew to compete, belting out ‘Rocky Road To Dublin’ as soon as they crossed the finish line in English Harbour!

The Talisker Atlantic Challenge is an annual 5,000km race, made more difficult by storms, sharks, sunstroke and sleep deprivation. Only 500 people have completed the race, with almost ten times that number summiting Mount Everest and nearly twice the number going to space! The crew was fourth home in the foursomes category, with five boats forced to drop out during the race.

The crew commented; “The support from our families and friends, and our sponsor Affidea, has been amazing. We want to thank everyone who supported us and donated. We’re thrilled to have surpassed our target of €20,000 for CUH since October. The funds raised will go towards helping to equip the new unit with state-of-the-art equipment, purchase high-flow oxygen for respiratory conditions and provide resources to look after children’s educational needs during hospital stays.”

Affidea Ireland CEO Tom Finn said; “Affidea was delighted to throw our weight behind this incredible team of Irish rowers. We applaud these young men for their bravery and sacrifice facing one of the toughest challenges on earth over the festive season and into the New Year. It’s fantastic to see the medical community working together while conquering this worthwhile adventure.”
