Affidea Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon hits the streets of Dublin for the 6th year

Nationwide search opens for Rock ‘n’ Run Idol Finalists

The Affidea Rock ‘n’ Roll Dublin Half Marathon, launched by former Irish International footballer Kevin Kilbane and Olympic track star Thomas Barr, is a unique running event that returns to the streets of Dublin on Sunday the 12th of August 2018 for the sixth time. With four distances to choose from, bespoke “must have” medals, music acts at each mile and a finish line concert it has become an annual summertime running tradition offering; Music, Moments, Medals and Miles.

Celebrating its sixth year, the event has something for runners of all abilities with a weekend of running with a half marathon, a 10K and a Family Fun Run in addition to a 5K on Saturday. The Affidea Rock ‘n’ Roll Dublin Half Marathon also acts as Athletics Ireland’s National Half Marathon Championships for the distance. Over 53,000 participants have taken part since the inaugural event in 2013, with a record number of 15,000 taking part in 2017 across the four distances. The total economic impact of the event was €7.8 million, filling 22,256 hotel room nights in Dublin.

Former Irish International football star Kevin Kilbane said: “I’m delighted to be involved in this year’s Affidea Rock ‘n’ Roll Dublin Half Marathon and I am really looking forward to lining up in a race that starts in the heart of Dublin and takes in so many landmarks along the route. I have always enjoyed running and my heroes as a kid were Eamonn Coghlan and Sonia O’Sullivan. When I retired from professional football I started to enter races of different distances to raise funds and awareness for the Down’s Syndrome Association (DSA), which is close to my heart.”

Affidea Brand Ambassador Thomas Barr, speaking at the launch, said: “What is brilliant about the Affidea Rock ‘n’ Roll Dublin Half Marathon is that it makes running fun, with live bands on the course, there is a real festival atmosphere created for participants and spectators. It’s a fantastic celebration of running and with the 5k, 10k and Family Fun it really is an event for everyone to enjoy!”

“We are excited to be celebrating our sixth year in Dublin. We have engaged with the strong running community of Dublin since 2013 and attracted runners from all over the world to this great city” said Stacey Campbell, Vice President of Global Events for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series. “We are looking forward to 2018 being the best year yet!”

Barry Downes, CEO of Affidea – Ireland’s leading provider of diagnostic imaging services including MRI, CT, X-Ray, Ultrasound and DXA scans – said: “As a strong supporter of the sporting community, we are delighted to continue the sponsorship of Rock ‘n’ Roll Dublin in 2018. This event is unique in that it brings together people of all ages and fitness levels to enjoy running in a fun and entertaining environment. This year, we will have representatives from all 16 Affidea countries taking part and I am personally looking forward to beating my 2017 time! Our new Affidea ExpressCare Minor Injuries and Illnesses Clinics offer the unique benefit of providing all essential services within our state-of-the-art centres, so we make the perfect match as the experts in our field, to help improve the health of our nation.”

John Foley, CEO Athletics Ireland, said “We are delighted that our National Half Marathon Championships will once again be part of the Affidea Rock ‘n’ Roll Dublin Half Marathon this August. We look forward to working with the Rock ‘n’ Roll team again this year to help deliver another fantastic weekend of running”.

Affidea entered the Irish market in 2007 through the acquisition of MRI Ireland. Affidea Ireland operates ten state-of-the-art diagnostic centres – four in Dublin (Dundrum, Northwood, Meath Primary Care and a new flagship clinic in Tallaght); one in Cork city with ultrasound services in Mallow Primary Care Centre; and centres in Kilkenny, Naas, Letterkenny, Northern MRI in Belfast, with another new centre opened in Waterford, in July 2017. In addition, Affidea works in partnership with hospitals to provide MRI services in Sligo General Hospital and the Ulster Independent Clinic in Belfast. Affidea Ireland, which employs approximately 300 people, continues to invest in the Irish healthcare sector with further centres expected in Galway and Limerick this year.

Additionally, this year Affidea ExpressCare officially launched as part of Affidea’s outpatient strategy to provide outstanding patient alternatives for minor injuries and minor illnesses, which should not need to take place in a traditional, highly pressurised hospital setting. Affidea ExpressCare provides patients with an alternative to busy Emergency Departments, combined with the added benefit of the full suite of Affidea diagnostic medical imaging, all within the same clinic. This will significantly benefit the health system, freeing up capacity for those most in need of care.

Affidea ExpressCare represents another multi-million investment in the Irish health system. The first Affidea ExpressCare facility is open in The Elysian in Cork, with a second to open in our flagship centre at Tallaght Cross East in Dublin, in the coming months. These centres provide access to outstanding healthcare, without an appointment, from 10am to 10pm, 365 days per year. Affidea ExpressCare is committed to providing an efficient and effective service, including seeing patients within a one-hour turnaround time.

Affidea ExpressCare operates independently, providing services to all patients who attend on a fee for service basis. Alternatively, for patients with Private Health Insurance with Laya and Irish Life Health, Affidea ExpressCare is a covered benefit.
