Affidea Ireland sponsors Relentless Rowers in the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge

Affidea is proud to sponsor a four-man team called the Relentless Rowers, in their bid to set a new World Record for the fastest crossing by row-boat of the Atlantic Ocean, while raising vital funds for the Cork University Hospital Paediatric Department.

This December, the Relentless crew – made up of Cork doctors Sean Underwood and Pat O’Connor, podiatrist Eoin O’Farrell and entrepreneur Tommy Browne – will race across the Atlantic Ocean, competing in the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge. The race starts in La Gomera, a Canary Island steeped in Maritime History. It was from this very island that Christopher Columbus set sail in search of the New World some 500 years ago. From here, they will race across 5,000km of open ocean towards the Carribean island of Antigua.

Last year’s National Geographic coverage of the race received viewing figures in excess of 60 million. Known as one of the toughest challenges on earth, made more difficult by raging seas, howling winds, sharks, blisters and salt rashes, sunstroke and sleep deprivation, there is little wonder that a mere 500 people have completed the race…while almost ten times that number have been to the summit of Mount Everest and nearly twice the number have been to space!

The crew commented; “We were delighted to meet members of the #AffideaFamily in CUH last month during a visit to the Pediatric Unit, for which we’re currently trying to raise €20,000. We are thrilled to have Affidea come on board as title sponsor and it has meant a huge amount to have Affidea backing the team; giving a new burst of energy to the campaign.”

“The current record stands at 35 days. We can beat this with a little trust in the weather and some #AffideaHealth help along the way! In the hospitals we work in, we are faced almost daily with the fragility of the human condition. Who knows what is around the corner for us – they say that you don’t choose dreams, but rather they choose you.”
