Concussion rates in Ireland are increasing, as the numbers of those playing contact sports increases and there is increased awareness about Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) due to accidents.
And as the management of a concussion serves as the best form of prevention, we at Affidea have partnered with the world’s leading healthcare experts to form the UPMC Concussion Network.
As the first of its kind in Ireland, the UPMC Concussion Network is a collaboration between Affidea, Ireland’s leading independent provider of diagnostic imaging and outpatient services; the Bon Secours Health System, Ireland’s largest private hospital group; and UPMC, a world-renowned academic health care network and insurer, to provide best-in-class concussion care.
Our role at Affidea is to introduce people of all ages to the first stage of the Network by administering ImPACT® neurocognitive testing at nine of our centres nationwide.
ImPACT, or Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment & Cognitive Testing, is a 30-minute computerised test that measures brain functioning such as memory, attention span, visual and verbal problem solving, reaction time and impulse control. It also records an inventory of concussion-related symptoms such as headache, dizziness and mental fogginess.
ImPACT compares two sets of tests before and after a suspected concussion – referred to as baseline and post-injury tests. The baseline test establishes ‘normal’ brain function, while a post-injury test compares data to support clinicians in making vital return-to-activity decisions.
ImPACT has pioneered this programme for more than 15 million individuals in over 20 languages worldwide since 2002, and Affidea’s offering of baseline and post-injury tests is by far the largest effort to date in any EU country.
By standardising diagnosis and treatment, we can ensure concussions, when managed properly, are treatable injuries not only for school-age and elite-level athletes in Ireland, but for people from all walks of life affected by this injury.
