Meet The #AffideaFamily – Radiographer Siobhán Sheridan

1. What’s your background?

I graduated from UCD in 2014 and began working in The Mater Public Hospital, where I had carried out most of my training as a student. I spent two-and-a-half years working in The Mater, where I gained vast experience working in a fast paced environment. There, I was trained to work in x-ray, DEXA, theatre and MRI.

2. Why did you join the #AffideaFamily?

When the opportunity arose to join the Affidea team, I was over the moon. Not only did it give me the opportunity to work closer to home, but also to focus my career path. I was able to expand my MRI knowledge and experience. My first exposure to MRI was when I was a patient having a scan in Affidea (formerly Euromedic) in Santry back in 2008. I was fascinated by the technology and principles of MRI, so since then I have always wanted to focus my skill-set on MRI. Affidea has given me the opportunity to pursue my dream and to further my education in MRI.

3. What differentiates us in your opinion?

Having worked in a busy public hospital for several years, I have experienced the hardship of patients being told they will have to wait up to 18 months for urgent scans that will ultimately define their treatment plan. The worry and stress that comes with this wait is unimaginable.

However, Affidea can often provide urgent MRI scans often within 24-48 hours, with a written radiologist’s report a further 48 hours later. I have witnessed first-hand the relief and peace of mind this service offers to patients, as well as the option to seek treatment as quickly as possible where necessary.

And still, all of this is provided with state-of-the-art equipment of the highest specification. I also really feel that the staff in our Affidea clinics offer a friendly, relaxed atmosphere to make our patients feel comfortable and at ease. Our Affidea motto is “nothing is more important than health” and this really is the backbone of our work ethic.

4. What does your average day look like?

Here at Affidea Northwood, I begin work at 7am and finish at 8pm. If I am working in MRI, I could scan anything from 40-50 patients in a day. For each scan, I will meet and greet the patient and check through our MRI safety questionnaire with the patient to ensure they are MRI safe – patient safety is paramount here at Affidea. I then explain what the scan will entail and how long it will be. On average, most scans take 15-20 minutes. However, some scans can be anything up to an hour long. For this reason, we provide music or radio for the patient to listen to during their scan. I also work in DEXA and x-ray regularly to keep my skills up-to-date. This offers a different atmosphere and change of pace to catch up on my CPD (continued professional development), which is compulsory for all radiographers.

5. How do you like to create a healthy work/life balance?

I am a keen runner and I like to keep my head clear by running on my days off. Thanks to great events like the Affidea Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon, exercise and community running is something which is highly encouraged by Affidea.
