Thanks to bringing home the bronze medal in the 400m hurdles at the European Championships in Berlin in August, Affidea Ambassador Thomas Barr was honoured with the Athlete of the Year accolade at the 2018 Irish Life National Athletics Awards, in addition to Track and Field Athlete of the Year, alongside a host of other worthy recipients.
Thomas was also Athlete of the Year in 2016, on the back of his fourth place finish at the Rio Olympics, only stepping onto the medal podium in Berlin topped that, the 26 year-old also running the second fastest time of his life, 48.31 seconds, and providing one of the headlines of the year – Wunderbarr!
Thomas told us; “I was delighted to be named as Athlete of the Year, which is a nice boost during the winter slog of tough training! I am absolutely thrilled with the award and recognition for a great year not only for me, but for everyone who has helped me get to where I am today, including Affidea who have supported me since 2016. Thank you!”
Thomas is already looking to 2019 to raise the bar again – the World Championships in Doha much later in the season, October, presenting a different sort of hurdle, before the focus shifts again to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
