Irish Olympian, record holder and Affidea Ambassador Thomas Barr set a season’s best last week to finish 3rd at the Diamond League meeting in Oslo – qualifying for the World Championships – and he is on his way to Finland this weekend for the European Athletics Team Championships.
Thomas said he was delighted to have run a sub-49 second lap from lane one in “the Premiership of athletics” and is ready for the European Championships, where the race of the event is expected to be the 400m hurdles, which features three of the top six finishers from the Rio Olympic Games, including Thomas.
He said; “I had a really good winter and lead up to it, thankfully injury-free. I’m a bit of an adrenaline junkie, so I like to live fast on and off the track! I’m big into drift car racing and water sports like wakeboarding, but I try to keep my hobbies somewhat sensible to make sure I’m in tiptop shape, particularly when I’m competing nearly every weekend throughout June.”
“It’s vital to look after my health year-round, which is why it’s so important to monitor my progress. Affidea’s scans are the gold standard for diagnosing accurate soft tissue and bone damage, so I’m really looking forward to popping into the new local clinic in Waterford when I’m home. It’s so handy having it right on my doorstep! I know some people get scared of the MRI machines sometimes because they’re loud and bang away normally, but they’re honestly totally different at Affidea and are so much more relaxed…to the point where I’m almost falling asleep in there!”
Thomas said his next big hurdle (excuse the pun, we here at the #AffideaFamily couldn’t resist!) is the World Championships in London in July.
He commented; “There’s a great Irish contingent going from a competing and support standpoint, so it’s a highlight for us all. All of the hard endurance work is done now, so my focus is on competing, and sharpening up my speed and technical work. Then I’ll be back to kick off Affidea Ireland’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon in August, which is a whole weekend of festivities and should be some craic. It’s an exciting summer for sure!”
