Operation Walk Ireland team called “angels with golden hands” – proudly sponsored in part by Affidea Ireland

Affidea Ireland is proud to support Operation Walk Ireland, a charity whose mission is to perform hip and knee replacements for patients with advanced arthritis who would otherwise not have access to this life-changing surgery, in developing countries such as Vietnam.

Operation Walk Ireland’s second mission in Hanoi this year aims to perform 50 joint replacements in 5 days, while engaging in a surgical educational programme with Vietnamese orthopaedic surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and physiotherapists.

Elizabeth Connolly, a nurse from Tallaght Hospital, said; “It’s been whirlwind few days but I couldn’t be happier that I made it Hanoi for Operation Walk Ireland 2019. It’s challenging working in a new environment with a new theatre team, especially as you have to be mindful of the amount of equipment and resources that you have to use, but necessity is the mother of invention as they say!”

“I am so fortunate to work with such incredible people on my Operation Walk Ireland team. We also have gotten such a warm welcome from the 108 military hospital staff who have supported us and made this mission possible. We especially couldn’t have done it without the voluntary interpreters who have worked so hard to keep the lines of communication open between us and our patients.”

Hearing the life stories of our patients, and seeing how much having a knee and hip replacement surgery means to them, has made all the early mornings and hectics days worthwhile. One of the most emotional moments for me was when a patient who was leaving theatre after her hip replacement took the time to tell us that we were “angels with golden hands”!

“The reality of being here and meeting the patients has made all the preparation and hard work beforehand worth it. So many people have supported and encouraged me to do this mission, and now that I am here working I am determined to give it my all and make sure that our patients benefit the most from it.”
