What is an echocardiogram scan?

An echocardiogram scan is a non-invasive, painless diagnostic tool that uses high-frequency sound waves to create live, moving images of the heart.

It is a safe, and highly accurate method for evaluating the structure and function of the heart, allowing doctors to detect, diagnose, and monitor a wide range of heart conditions without radiation exposure.

Who is this service for?

This service is for patients who have been referred by their GP or Cardiologist. The report will be shared with your referrer to assist in their evaluation of your health.

What's involved?

The procedure is very similar to the ultrasounds used during pregnancy and is performed by a cardiac sonographer.

You will lie on your left side on an exam table.
The sonographer applies a clear, lukewarm gel to your chest. This helps the sound waves travel from the device to your heart.
The technician presses a wand-like device called a transducer firmly against your skin. They move it around to capture different angles of the heart.
The procedure lasts roughly 30 minutes.

Do I need to prepare?

In most cases, a standard echocardiogram requires no special preparation. Unless otherwise directed, you can eat, drink, and take medications as usual.
