Why Bone Health Matters?
Bones are the framework of your body. They support you, protect your organs, anchor your muscles, and store calcium. Good bone health is essential at every stage of life. Strong bones help you stay active and reduce the risk of fractures and bone-related diseases such as osteoporosis, osteopenia, and brittle bone disease.
Who should attend the bone health clinic?
- Early Menopause, Menopausal and Postmenopausal women.
- Family history of fragility fractures (e.g. hip fracture, non-traumatic spinal fracture, low velocity wrist fracture).
- Suffered a fragility fracture.
- People of low body weight or those identified to be at risk of fragility fracture.
- People who are known to have Osteopaenia or osteoporosis on DXA scans.
- People who have conditions or take medications that affect bone health (e.g. coeliac, thyroid disease, epilepsy, low body weight, regular steroid usage)
- Current Fracture or broken bone. Previous history of a fracture or broken bone.
- Family history of osteoporosis.
- Notice a decrease in height or a stooped posture.
What does the Bone Clinic Provides?
- Advice for Maintaining Healthy Bones is provided, including dietary advice, exercise and education to ensure safety to reduce and aim to assist in the prevention of falls.
- Monitoring and management of Bone Health – a full nursing assessment is carried out and where indicated blood tests and a Dexa scan are scheduled.
- Based on the assessment and consultation with a nurse, a customised treatment plan is created for the individual overseen by Dr Len Harty (Consultant Rheumatologist).
- Scheduling and management of treatment plan.
